Deal is Done; Dollar General Coming to Welch

WELCH—You’ve heard the rumors. Now we give you confirmation. Dollar General is coming to Welch.

Welch Area Development Authority (WADA) representative Ernie Callison has informed that Dollar General closed on the property at the southwest corner of St. Louis St. (4440 Rd.) & Highway 10 (south of the old Eastside Station, now Upholstery Station) yesterday, Wed., Aug. 21, 2013. Dollar General plans to begin work approximately Sept. 3, with a target opening around the first of 2014.

According to Wikipedia, Dollar General Corporation is a U.S. chain of variety stores headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. As of January 2012, Dollar General operated over 10,000 stores in 40 U.S. states.

The stores tend to locate in smaller communities than those where Walmart would go. In recent years, the chain has started constructing more stand-alone stores, typically in areas not served by another general-merchandise retailer.

Dollar General offers both name brand and generic merchandise—including off-brand goods and closeouts of name-brand items—in the same store, often on the same shelf. Although it has the word “dollar” in the name, Dollar General is not a dollar store. Most of its products are priced at more than $1.00. However, goods are usually sold at set price points of penny items and up to the range of 50 to 60 dollars, not counting phone cards and loadable store gift cards.
