Weather Report, Jan. 29, 2010

Posted on 29 January 2010 by Tyson Wynn

WELCH—The weather doesn’t seem to be as severe as was predicted by those calling for an icepocalypse, but we did get a cover of sleet/ice last night. It turned to snow this morning, and it has been falling at a good clip all day. Here’s an on-the-spot report.

Split Results for Wildcat Basketball Homecoming 2010

Posted on 17 January 2010 by Tyson Wynn

WELCH—Saturday was homecoming at the Welch Wildcat Gym. After the homecoming court was presented and Sierra Hankins was crowned homecoming queen by Joey Powers, your Wildcats and Lady Cats took the floor against the Commerce Tigers and Lady Tigers.

Welch Wildcats v. Commerce Tigers

Joey Powers takes the ball to its home!

Your Wildcats pounced on the visiting Commerce Tigers from tip-off, which Joey Powers secured for Welch, allowing the Wildcats to sink their first bucket just 14 seconds into the game. The 6’5″ Powers must surely have frustrated the visitors, as he got in a groove and put on quite a performance the first quarter. He poured in 11 first-quarter points, and the Cats led 15-4 after the first buzzer.

The second quarter was much of the same, as the Cats and their 1-3-1 zone flustered the visitors. The Tigers eventually found the range, but the Cats extended their lead to 13 during the second quarter. Powers scored from all over the court, hitting a 3-pointer, short jump shots, and a two-handed dunk, racking up 19 in the first half. A pair of threes from Chance Harris and another trey from Austin Buchanan kept the Tiger defense off balance and unable to focus. The Cats went into the half leading 30-17.

Gabe Moore started the second half right with a three-pointer for the Cats, and the two teams began trading baskets in the first minutes of the third quarter. At the end of the quarter, the Cats had extended their lead to 45-26.

Back-to-back dunks by Powers in the fourth period sparked a 9-0 run for the Cats and pushed their lead to 25 with four minutes remaining in the game. The reserves finished off the game very strong, and the final tally showed a Cat victory, 57-37. Usually a very physical contest—and sometimes fraught with frustration—the Welch-Commerce match tonight was characterized by good sportsmanship all around, other than by some Commerce fans who sat in this reporter’s proximity.

Point-wise, Joey Powers again led the Cats, scoring 34. Chance Harris contributed eight, Brenton Hale bucketed six, Austin Buchanan nailed four, Gabe Moore added three, and Dakota Chenoweth scored one.

Welch Lady Cats v. Commerce Lady Tigers

Sierra Hankins and puts it up

Your Lady Cats entertained the Lady Tigers from Commerce this Saturday night, concluding Welch’s 2010 basketball homecoming festivities. Hoping to avenge a loss earlier in the week, the Lady Cats matched the visitors shot for shot with big treys from Krystin Marlow, keeping the Lady Cats and Lady Tigers neck and neck.

The second quarter saw the Lady Cats fall behind, as they went cold from the field and added only five points to their total. At the end of the first half, the Lady Cats trailed the Lady Tigers, 29-17. Marlow led the Lady Cats’ scoring attack, bucketing three treys in the half.

The Lady Cats returned from the locker room and clawed their way back to narrow the gap to eight and ended the third quarter trailing 33-25.

Throughout the fourth quarter, the Lady Cats just could not put enough shots together to close the Lady Tiger lead. In the end, the Lady Cats lost, 49-37.

Krystin Marlow led the Lady Cats with 13, Sierra Hankins and Tylor Dodson added 11 each, and Kelsie Smith made two.
